The one thing that we were all hoping would not return with the new school year is the bad behaviour of so many drivers in front of the school along Trimble between 5th avenue and 6th avenue; however; unfortunately the poor driving behaviour has returned.

We have had numerous complaints from parents walking their children to school on the illegal parking, driving and turning behaviour of drivers. We will be calling the police and the city regularly to ask them to come and hand out tickets to try to discourage this poor behaviour. Parents who insist on driving are supposed to park at least 2 blocks away from the school and walk in with their children. This is not happening!

We will be starting a student led grade 5/6/7 Safety Patrol that will be sponsored by the school through the principal and the grade 6/7 teachers, the VSB and supported by the Vancouver Police Department. All children in grade 5, 6 and 7 who are interested in being part of the Safety Patrol will be trained by the Vancouver Police Department on Tuesday September 27th at 9am and will receive safety equipment to wear when on Patrol.

Lara Osen will be the parent liaison person for this group. Lara will be looking for some parents who can volunteer to oversee the kids patrolling and attend the VPD training session with the kids which should happen before the end of this month. If you are interested in assisting Lara, please email us at [email protected]These parents will also be monitoring and writing down licence plates of people who are parking illegally or driving in a dangerous manner around the school. They will all be reported to the VPD.

The school has asked parents to co-operate however we are still finding that the dangerous driving prevails. Last year in June, in two separate incidents, two children were almost struck by cars. There will be no tolerance towards anyone who is endangering the children of the school and we are hoping that the Safety Patrol will eliminate this poor behaviour.

Attached is the notice that will be sent home this week with the grade 5, 6 and 7 students who are interested in being a part of the Safety Patrol before and after school.

REMEMBER TO HAND IN YOUR FORM BEFORE TRAINING TUESDAY SEPTEMBER 27th
